UNDERSTANDING Urinary tract infections

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common bacterial infections that affect the urinary system, which includes the bladder, urethra, ureters, and kidneys. UTIs occur when bacteria, most commonly Escherichia coli (E. coli), enter the urinary tract and multiply, leading to inflammation and infection. UTIs can range from mild to severe and can affect individuals of all ages and genders, although they are more prevalent in women.

Causes of UTIs can vary, but the most common cause is the entry of bacteria into the urinary tract through the urethra. Factors that increase the risk of developing UTIs include sexual activity, use of certain types of contraceptives, menopause, urinary tract abnormalities, weakened immune system, urinary catheterization, and underlying medical conditions such as diabetes.

Symtpoms of urinary tract infections

If you are experiencing a urinary tract infection, you may encounter one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Frequent and urgent need to urinate
  • Burning or pain during urination
  • Cloudy or bloody urine
  • Strong-smelling urine
  • Pelvic pain or discomfort
  • Pain during sexual intercourse
  • Feeling tired or shaky

ACUPUNCTURE FOR urinary tract infections

Acupuncture can be a beneficial complementary therapy for managing urinary tract infections and promoting overall urinary system health. By targeting specific acupuncture points, it aims to enhance the body’s immune response, reduce inflammation, and support the healing process.

Acupuncture has anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce inflammation in the urinary tract, relieving pain and discomfort.

Acupuncture stimulates the immune system, promoting a stronger defense against bacterial infections and supporting the body’s ability to fight off UTIs.

Acupuncture can help regulate the flow of urine, reducing urinary retention and promoting proper elimination of bacteria from the urinary tract.

Acupuncture has a calming effect on the nervous system, reducing stress levels, which can be beneficial for individuals prone to recurrent UTIs triggered by stress.
