UNDERSTANDING Plantar fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis is a common condition that causes heel pain and discomfort. It occurs when the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue that connects the heel bone to the toes and supports the arch of the foot, becomes inflamed or irritated. Plantar fasciitis is often characterized by sharp, stabbing pain in the heel, especially with the first steps in the morning or after periods of inactivity.
Causes of plantar fasciitis can include excessive pressure on the feet due to high-impact activities, such as running or jumping, prolonged standing or walking on hard surfaces, wearing unsupportive footwear, and certain risk factors like flat feet, high arches, or tight calf muscles. Over time, the repetitive strain and stress on the plantar fascia can lead to microtears and inflammation, resulting in heel pain.
symptoms of plantar fasciitis
If you are experiencing plantar fasciitis, you may encounter one or more of the following symptoms:
- Pain in the heel, usually on the underside or along the arch of the foot
- Stiffness or aching sensation in the heel after periods of rest
- Increased pain with the first steps in the morning or after prolonged periods of sitting or standing
- Pain that worsens with activity, especially activities that involve bearing weight on the affected foot
